Adele Shalik Reviews Natural Products

I'm a 54-year old New Yorker, married with three grown children. I have a dual undergraduate degree is in mathematics and literature and my Masters in Library and Information Science. After graduating I worked at a national public accounting firm in their business research department.

How does all this prepare me to review cosmetics? I think my mathematics background suited my analytical side and my literature interest solidified the joys of writing. I parlayed these talents into a career in research which requires diligence, passion and creativity--all ideal qualities for reviewing new products.

I've enjoyed cosmetics ever since my mom gave me the go-ahead at age 16 when heavy eyeliner and white lipstick were all the rage. Since then I've experimented with and read about makeup from every perspective except natural until this past summer when my assortment of chemical-laden cosmetics caused a major allergic reaction. Until that point I believed that people who sought out organic products were on some new age campaign to save the planet. I've since had to educate myself on the real benefits of natural makeup and the many products that can beautify us in healthier ways.

This past summer when I had to stop wearing makeup I thought I'd have to go bare-faced from then on--a daunting prospect. All my tried-and-true products seemingly turned against me. It wasn't until my allergist suggested natural products that I began to see this realm of cosmetics in a whole new light. I threw out my old stash--quite a collection--and have begun replenishing my supply in health food stores and from online sites.

This process been a real education and eye-opener. I've quickly learned that the field of natural cosmetics is under-reported and easily misunderstood. Natural-living-for-women has been a consistently reliable and informative site for me and I'm excited about the prospect of sharing my findings and opinions with women who are on a similar journey. Cosmetics is both an art and a science but I believe that ultimately, acquiring and wearing them should be fun!
