Can You Take Good Care Of Your Skin
And Still Be Green?
What's In This Issue:
Tips and resources to make taking care of your skin this summer easy and green.
New info, tips and resources added to Natural Living for Women
It's getting hot.
It's official this week summer begins. Many of us are already feeling the heat. Time to shed those extra layers and expose a little skin.
Healthy looking skin takes some care. New products are available all the time to help keeping our skin looking it's best. The
challenge can be finding true natural, green products.
Many of us are beginning to expect even more from our products:
Safe and natural, organic if possible
No animal testing, no animal ingredients
Fair Trade or Sweatshop free
Companies that give back
Some of my favorite summertime products come from companies I have learned to trust and some new favorites.
Start with the inside
Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. The easy access to bottled water makes that easy. Being the recycler that I am I've tried to wash my bottles for reuse but wasn't happy with that. I have my own alternative to a plastic bottle.
I save and reuse glass bottles.
They are easy to clean, don't retain odors, safe, recyclable, if I lose it I'm not too worried, although I am quite fond of my cobalt blue bottle and no petroleum from plastics.
Choose a bottle with a cap that can seal tight and not leak, I actually found a cap from another product that worked very well or use a cheap stopper.
Worried about breaking the glass. Try one of the new reusable bottles in safe, light weight stainless steel or lined aluminum bottles from
The bottles are attractive, fun and functional. The company's website provides lots of information about their earth friendly products.
Taking care of the Outside
Great skin starts with exfoliation and then a high quality moisturizer. One of my favorite brands is Aubrey
Organics. They have everything you will need for your skin and a moisturizer for every skin type.
Make sure to check out their sun protection and after sun products. One of my favorite's is organic aloe vera. I have found nothing more soothing than aloe vera when your skin has seen too much sun. I keep mine in the fridge and my son knows where to go to soothe
his skin if he wasn't careful in the sun.
Sun Protective Clothing
We all know we should be using more sunscreen, the experts say most of us are not using enough. I know I'm guilty of this but
using sunscreen all over as often as needed can be expensive.
Clothing with a UPF factor (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) can help. Wearing the proper clothing protects our skin so we don't
have to use so much sunscreen. And no, our regular clothes do not offer enough sun protection. Dense fabrics are better but for
best results clothing made with a UPF is the best and has been recommended by health care professionals.
This was quite a challenge. There are many companies that offer sun protective clothing. But trying to find ones that are also
committed to the environment and human rights is something else.
I went through company after company with no luck.
One of the problems is that sun-protective clothing is made from synthetic materials and they are not known for being green but
companies can choose methods that cause the least harm.
There is an option, LL Bean has a small selection of sun-protective clothing with a UPF(Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of 40. Look for Tropic wear under women's clothing for fishing. (Sorry about that, I like to link directly to the exact page but sometimes the links are so long that I find sometimes they don't want to work.)
LL.Bean does a good job of being ethically and environmentally concerned. They are a company trying to do the right thing. If your curious about their commitment look at the company information on their website. They also received a B rating from the Better World Shopping guide for their company
Not many options for styles. And if we don't like the way the clothes look we might not wear them. Sun protection is so important that it may be well worth buying UPF clothing that you won't mind wearing.
More and more of us are demanding more company responsibility hopefully before too long we will have more options.
While we are waiting, consider
Coolibar which has one of the best selections I have seen for stylish women's clothing plus they have a great selection of hats.
I also looked to LL Bean for hats but was disappointed in their selection. I did find Tula Hats. They have hats that have a high degree of UPF made from environmentally sustainable Palm, handwoven by skilled Mexican hat makers using traditional methods.
For fabric hats designed for sun protection
Patagonia carries a few styles. And Patagonia is a company very much aware of environmental and ethical issues and doing their best to be responsible. It can be done and they are proving that it's possible and profitable.
Stop those bug bites
Itching and scratching damages skin, that's bad enough but darn those bites can be itchy. Stop those insects before they bite with Crocodile - All Natural Herbal Insect Repellent. Once you read the ingredients you'll know they are safe but do they work.
They have received good reviews for their pleasant smelling insect repellent. It's well worth trying and see if it works for
you, if it's really possible to keep those bugs away without using chemicals like DEET.
With some care we can take good care of our skin this summer and stay true to our values. Well mostly, there are times when some
exceptions should be made. We each have to find a little balance.
New Additions to NLW Website
I have made several additions to my site in the past month. Just click on the links in the text below and you will be taken to the right page.
After learning so much about mineral makeup I decided it was time to try it for myself when I went looking for the best mineral makeup. Check this page out and see what I discovered.
Looking for a natural sunless tanner on my natural cosmetics page you'll find some good alternatives to conventional products. Safe, natural ingredients can be found in sunless tanners.
Learn the best ways to apply your sunless tanners so that the results are natural and last as long as possible on my page on how to apply sunless tanners.
Well, that's all for this month. Until next time. Have a great month.
