Skip The Chemicals and Choose Fresh Natural Ingredients With Organic Perfume

Chances are you have yet to try organic perfume and use one or more of the popular and well known fragrances. You probably choose it because it smells nice not for the ingredients used to make it. Would it surprise you to know that very little if any natural ingredients are used in most perfume?
Here’s what you should get with organic perfume:

  • Pure organic, botanical ingredients.
  • No harmful chemicals.
  • Natural, healthier fragrances.
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Supports organic farming
  • Ethically produced

So….What’s In Your Perfume?

Just to give you an idea of what kinds of ingredients are typicallly found in perfume I checked into the ingredients from two different brands. A popular fragrance, Curious by Britney Spears advertised as fresh and romantic and Vanilla Fields, a perfume made by Coty.

Curious

Alcohol Denat.; Fragrance (Parfum); Water (Aqua); Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone; Benzyl Benzoate; Benzyl Salicylate; Citral; Citronellol; Farnesol; Geraniol; Hexyl Cinnamal; Hydroxycitronellal; Isoeugenol; Limonene; Linalool; Tetradibutyl Pentaerythrityl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate; Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane; Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate; Ethylhexyl Salicylate

Vanilla Fields

ALCOHOL, FDC YELLOW #5, FDC GREEN #3, FRAGRANCE, WATER, ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE, BENZOPHENONE-3, ETHYLHEXYL SALICYLATE, BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE, BHT, PROPYLENE GLYCOL

Vanilla Fields contains all synthetic ingredients. Curious does contain some natural ingredients limonene being one and there are few other ingredients that may be either man made or natural. Both do contain the ingredient fragrance and that is an unknown.

A quick check for ingredient safety on the Skin Deep Database shows Curious rating a 9 and Vanilla Fields a 10 both considered high health concerns and the biggest problem is the word fragrance. What is in fragrance? To the company making the perfume it is probably a trade secret so we can only guess but often it can be a mix of natural and synthetic scent ingredients and chemicals including petroleum based ingredients and phthalates, a toxic ingredient that has been linked to hormone disruption in our bodies the effects of which are being studied.

Why are so many chemicals used? I am not a chemist but from what I can tell there are many reasons. Some of the chemicals are used to help fragrance last on the skin, some provide long shelf life while others may be used because they offer an inexpensive solution to pure, natural ingredients.

Basic Natural and Organic Perfume Ingredients

  • Organic or natural essential oils.
  • Distilled water.
  • Organic natural grain alcohol from a variety of different grains.

For many organic perfumes those are the only ingredients. A big difference… but natural and organic perfume offers more than great ingredients. An added benefit comes from the use of essential oils. Essential oils offer more than fragrance they can help you relax, feel energized or even improve your concentration.

Need another reason?

When you choose perfume made from organic flowers it eliminates the environmental problems associated with flower growing like the use of so many pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides. When these chemicals are used or disposed of it create problems especially for those people in other countries where most of the flowers are grown and where pesticide use is far less regulated. This makes organic perfume the perfect answer.

Choosing Organic Perfume

I always liked the thought of having a signature fragrance. The one fragrance that you always, hopefully pleasantly, associate with a certain person.

Fragrance is a very personal choice. It can make you feel happy, sexy, confident or fresh as spring. Scents can alter depending on body chemistry and often smell quite different from person to person.

Right after you apply a fragrance and it may smell one way but after awhile reacting to your body chemistry change into something quite different. Sometimes wonderful sometimes not so much.

All this makes trying to buy an organic perfume on-line a problem. I am tempted by all the wonderful sounding combinations but between my allergies to even some natural scents and my complete lack of knowledge of how lavender will smell when mixed with ylang ylang makes that sometimes $50 or more for a bottle of organic perfume not so appealing. So I have chosen some brands below that offer samples or are affordably priced so that you can feel like you won’t be out too much if a fragrance doesn’t work out.

A Few Choices For Organic Perfume

  • Lavender Farms

If you are a fan of the scent of lavender like I am you will find they have a wonderful selection of single note fragrance and some interesting blends. This company grows their own certified organic lavender and chooses from 70 different varieties of lavender for their perfumes which include sprays, cream (pure fragrance without the alcohol) and roll-ons. The affordably priced roll-ons are an easy way to enjoy fragrance throughout the day and see if lavender is the scent for you.

As a person sensitive to scent, lavender is one of the few floral scents that I can enjoy without problem. I find it to be lightly sweet and refreshing plus it is very popular for use in aromatherapy.

  • Ayala Moriel Perfums

This wonderful website offers very thorough descriptions of all the ingredients and their source along with elegant and romantic descriptions of the perfumes that can almost having you imagining what the scents would be like. The ingredients are natural, certified organic when available, sustainable, fair trade sourced and cruelty free.

It is difficult to choose from so many different fragrances but they do offer inexpensive samples and small collections along with instructions on how to go about sampling perfume properly. Ayala Moriel Perfums will also work with you to create a signature fragrance by using a fragrance questionnaire and consultation.

  • Rich Hippie

This wonderful line of organic perfumes has recently been featured in major magazines. The ingredients are organic and wild harvested plants and flowers. The scents are varied like Bliss, a romantic blend of ingredients like Bulgarian Rose and citrus, Shambala, an uplifting blend of jasmine, lavender, rose and ylang ylang and Foxy Lady with a more sensual scent from ingredients like patchouli, vanilla, ylang ylang and neroli.

They are available in convenient roll-on bottles that will easily fit in your purse for easy application when scent needs refreshing. They offer dozens of sample sized fragrances.

Fragrance and Allergy

Fragrances are one of the most common cause of allergic reactions and synthetic ingredients in fragrance are often the problem. Since I am so sensitive to scent I had all but given up trying to find a scent that didn’t give me a headache. The natural ingredients in organic perfume can help but for a sensitive person even these fragrances can present a problem. I discovered several essential oils that bother me which of course makes sense since essential oils are the essence of flowers or plants some of which cause me to have allergic reactions.

In trying to figure out which scents will not bother me I choose an organic perfume with just a few or even just one essential oil. The fewer ingredients gives me a chance to isolate those that are problematic.

Choosing organic perfume is a way to experience pure, healthy, natural fragrances that do not disguise your natural body chemistry but blend with it to create your unique fragrance signature.
