Potato Rub

by Alexa Martin
(Chicago, IL)

Sounds crazy but it works. It is great for evening out your skin tone and greatly diminishes the appearance of blemishes.

Cut a potato in slices (might as well use the whole and save some in the fridge)
Rub the potato in circular motion on skin where it's needed. It's okay if its juicy. That makes it better!

Use it everyday and in about a week you will notice the blemishes slowly fading!

Baking soda and organic green tea exfoliant

by Lea
(Dublin)

Mix baking soda with anti-oxidant packed organic green tea to make a paste that is moist enough to rub on your skin. Rub and rinse.

EDITOR'S NOTES:

Thanks Lea!

This sounds like a great, simple and inexpensive way to exfoliate. Baking soda provides gentle scrubbing action. The green tea adds anti-oxidants, as Lea said and offers some anti-inflammatory properties both especially good for aging skin. Adding some brewed green tea makes this a good for your skin scrub.

Aspirin Facial

by Allison
(USA)

* Generic Aspirin tablets
* Your own creamy face wash

Simply crush up enough aspirin tablets until it's a fine powder. Mix with your regular face wash, and gently apply to skin with a circular motion.

This should work well with most skins types; however those with sensitive skin should try it on a small patch of skin before applying to the whole face.

Editor's notes:

Aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acids are frequently used in skin care. They are popular anti aging ingredients so this mixture or a variation of this might be good for aging skin.

Aspirin can be especially beneficial for acne prone skin since it has anti-infammatory and exfoliating benefits.

For other skin types try mixing the aspirin with other ingredients such as yogurt or olive oil. Check my page on homemade exfoliants for some ideas.

Alison made a good point. Test this mixture out if you are sensitive.

Soil

by lee

It's just salt and oil. Basically you just pour oil into a bowl and add salt.

Kattie's Exfoliant

by Kattie Fargher
(Snohomish, WA)

There isn't just one recipe I follow, usually I just ransack my kitchen and use what I find! The last batch I made was wonderful and smelled even better!

Ground Coffee (grind for a turkish, which is #2 at starbucks!)

White Sugar (I kept adding some until the consistency was thickened to my liking)

Couple Dashes of Kosher Salt (when not using coffee, i use table salt)

Teaspoon of Olive Oil

Lemon Juice (when not using coffee, I use this so the exfoliant doesn't harden)

After exfoliating, I wash my face with peppermint Dr. Bronner's!

EDITOR'S NOTES:

Thanks Kattie for submitting this exfoliant. It's a great example of using what you have on hand and experimenting with ingredients to find one that works for you.

Simple and easy stuff that I had on hand at home

by Sarah
(Sarver Pa)

I used my face wash and added salt to it and scrubbed my face, then used Vaseline added sugar to that and used it on my lips, rinsed everything and put Vaseline on my lips when I was done for extra moisture..

EDITOR'S NOTES:

Thanks for these quick and easy exfoliant ideas Sarah. One suggestion consider using Un-Petroleum instead of petroleum based Vaseline.
