Sheer Cover Mineral Makeup Review

by Gloria
(Pennsylvania)

I decided to try Sheer Cover Mineral Makeup after watching the infomercial for it several times. It seemed to be simple to apply, and it was cheaper than other mineral makeups that I had looked into purchasing.

I received the 'medium' toned set, as I was told when I ordered that it was ideal for most Caucasian women. This set was far to dark for my very light toned skin, and looked almost orange, even with the lightest application. I called the company, who then sent me the 'light' toned set, completely free of charge. I tried using only the lighter of the two colors (which you receive in each kit), and even that was no where near the right shade. All of the Sheer Cover mineral makeup colors I tried had very yellow undertones, and my skin is primarily pink undertones, so it did not look natural. I again called the company, so that I could return both kits, and they offered to send me their new 'ultra-light' toned kit, again completely free of charge.

The 'ultra-light' toned kit was a much better match. I used the powdered minerals frequently, as they gave me fairly even coverage, so I didn't feel the need to use the cream concealer. The concealer doesn't seem to work too well on uneven skin (lines under eyes, slight bumps, etc.), as it ends up highlighting the blemish rather than concealing it. That said, it was worth the price for the powdered minerals alone, as they did a great job and lasted quite some time for me.

I really liked the ultra-light set, and my experience with their customer service absolutely blew me away - I never expected a company to send me three different products & not ask me to return the ones I previously received. However, it did take quite a long time on the phone with them to cancel the auto-shipments (I started ordering the make-up only when I needed it, and only the powders). They tried for about 15-20 minutes, offering me deals so that I would not cancel the shipments.

Thank you Gloria for your review. After seeing the commercials for Sheer Cover I'm sure many women are wondering about it and are tempted to try it out.

Reading reviews is a great place to start but before I buy I also want to know the ingredients, if it is cruelty free and it's good to see environmentally friendly packaging.

Other than seeing the infomercial I know nothing about Sheer Cover so I checked out their website. I did find an ingredient list for their mineral makeup. There were a few ingredients that were a little different than those I usually see in mineral makeup, Boron nitride and bisabolol, both ingredients are considered low hazard by the Skin Deep Database but of concern to those with sensitive skin was bismuth oxychloride which has been found to be an irritant for some individuals.(may cause itching, rashes, breakouts etc.)

Ingredients list for Sheer Cover from website:

Mineral Foundations: Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide (12.00%). Other Ingredients: Boron Nitride, Bisabolol, Aspalathus Linearis Leaf Extract, May Contain (+/-): Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Mica, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)

I did not find an ingredient list for the other products in their line or any info on animal testing.

Sheer Cover Makeup Review

by CMS
(Pittsburgh PA)

I wouldn't recommend Sheer Cover for fair, sensitive or dry skin. I ordered the light starter kit which had loads of products. Mascara, brushes, 2 concealer colors, face wash, lotion and 2 colors of foundation.

I just used the lightest foundation, the other fair color is more of an orange shade. I still turned a slight orange shade after applying the foundation. The foundation is very heavy and felt very dry.

I also found it itchy and mildly irritating. I called the company and asked if they had a lighter shade and they said they didn't. So I used the face wash and lotion to remove the product and rehydrate.

The fragrance of both was very strong and after applying both burned my skin . I have not since tried a new mineral foundation. I use Este Lauder Double Wear in Shell.

Sheer Cover and Some Unknown "Private Label" Brands

by Angela
(Sycamore IL)

I too fell for the Sheer Cover pitch and signed up. I quickly found out that the "foundation" part of the kit was definitely not for me. I am now 53 and got the kit when I was 51. I have pretty good skin, medium-fair, not lined and not dry (I credit that to my own line of Shea Butter cream) but the foundation made my skin look lined and horrible in daylight.

The problem is the use of Mica - great for flawless younger skin which likes a bit of glitter but bad for older skin.

I have to say I did like the cream concealer quite a bit. Enough so, that even though I have long since canceled the program (they sent WAY too much merchandise way too often - even when I changed delivery to every 90 days)that I sometimes buy it from an eBay seller.

The Mineral Veil wasn't bad either because it was sheer and matte. I got to where I would just use concealer and Mineral Veil but the coverage was minimal.

Right now I am using (and plan to carry in my shop) some private label brands and so far I am really impressed. The one I have chosen to go with is a "pure" line with just the minerals and beneficial zinc but no bismuth or talc. They have a good assortment of matte finishes for base, blush and eye colors plus a bunch of "fun" shades too and the foundation even looks good out in bright daylight.

Now THAT is the acid test.

I am looking at a second natural line that has some cream products that also have no artificial ingredients as I would like to find a substitute for the Sheer Cover concealer.

Despite being "mineral makeup" not all the Sheer Cover products are "pure minerals".

PS - Try using the mineral colors on your lips. I tried it tonight with my natural shea butter lip balm and a nice red-brown mineral pigment. It worked like a charm and looked so natural. Just apply clear balm or gloss to lips, pick up a tiny bit of mineral powder on your finger and blend it in.

Too fun.

EDITOR'S COMMENTS:

Thank you Angela for the great review and tips.

The smaller companies who create their own mineral makeup do seem to offer the most natural and purest ingredients with the best overall results.

Sheer Mineral Make-up

by Lee
(Winston-Salem, N.C)

I used Sheer Mineral today and I noticed that my skin felt soft but taunt. As the day progressed my skin felt dry and kinda itchy. It almost felt like a slight chemical burn when I went to wash my face. I don't think I will be using this again.

Don't do it! Sheer Cover Review

by Lisa
(Temple, TX)

I've used Sheer Cover and it burned my skin! I went to cancel my shipment and they already had sent me another package that I didn't ask for, then said that I had been charged for it and I would only get half of my money back until they received their product back at my expense. I do believe that this is a rip off and they should take the commercials off the air. When I wore the make up, it covered nothing.

EDITOR'S NOTES:

Thanks Lisa

The Sheer Cover product you used probably contains bismuth oxychloride. This ingredient is typically the one that causes skin irritation in some women. Many great products do not contain this ingredient and some of them have been reviewed on this site.

Below are the ingredients for Sheer Cover from their website:

Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide (12.00%). Other Ingredients: Boron Nitride, Bisabolol, Aspalathus Linearis Leaf Extract, May Contain (+/-): Mica, Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)
