Vegan Brushes
Saying No To Animal Hair
Are you choosing cruelty free or vegan brushes for either cosmetic application or hair care? Did you know that typically our makeup brushes are made from squirrel, goat or who knows what kind of animal? I have a good set of make-up brushes that I bought many years ago. They were not cheap but well worth the cost as they have lasted many years. At the time I didn't give any thought as to what they were made of. I couldn't say if there were other choices available. I didn't look so who's to say. But more than likely they are some kind of animal fur. As these brushes need to be replaced I will buy vegan brushes. Even though now I would prefer to have all vegan brushes I will not just throw these away. After all, the damage has already been done. It seems wasteful to throw them away because they are not cruelty free.

Vegan brushes made from TaklonWanting to try mineral makeup, I found I needed a new brush that I didn't have. A vegan kabuki brush made of Taklon was my choice. Taklon, a man made synthetic, has been found to be a very good replacement for animal hair brushes. I have found it to be very soft and my mineral makeup has gone on smoothly with no problems. I know that some women do not care for applying mineral makeup with a synthetic brush but my experience with this was good. No complaints here. The reason animal fur has been found to be so effective is because of it's structure. It has little ridges on it that grab the powder and hold it in the brush for easy application. New vegan brushes made with Taklon are made with microscopic pock marks that duplicate natural hair. Giving it the ability to mimic the smooth application of animal fur.

Where to buyVegan cosmetic brushes can easily be purchased both online and locally. An easy source locally could be as close as your arts and crafts store. Many art brushes are made from Taklon and could easily be used to apply eye shadow or other powders. Wherever you decide to buy your brushes, decide how you want to use them. For an all over application, a large fluffier brush may work perfectly while more precise application like eye shadow will need a brush with a more precise point. There are several companies on-line that offer vegan brushes. Some of these companies also source the handles on their brushes in an environmentally responsible ways. A good source is
Sevi Cosmetics
which offers a complete line of brushes.
Larenim
carries the vegan kabuki brush that I am so happy with. This brush is so soft my makeup goes on easily and smoothly. Both of the companies that I reviewed on best mineral makeup now offer a nice selection of vegan brushes check out
Alima Cosmetics
and Afterglow Cosmetics.
Expect a good large brush to cost upwards of $20. The mineral makeup brush I bought cost $25, which I thought was quite a bit to spend but my previous experience with a high quality brush made me OK with this purchase. The brushes I have been using have been around at least 15 years. What about hair brushes? Vegan brushes for hair are easy. Just stay away from natural bristle brushes when you shop. Natural bristle means animal. As I was searching for cruelty free brushes, I found several companies offering hair brushes made from boar bristle that was advertised as obtained with no harm to the animals. I guess I am a skeptic but unless I knew and trusted the company I would have doubts about how the animals were cared for etc. I'd rather be sure. Brushes can be found almost everywhere that are made from synthetics. Most stores carry them. I'm sure that whatever needs you have one can be found that is not animal hair. I usually discuss brushes with my hair stylist and he tells me what kind of brush will work for me. While it's easy to buy vegan hair brushes, not very many companies sell vegan brushes for cosmetics just yet but that too will change as more of us question how our products are made and start requesting different choices.
